Effectiveness of Using Teaching Aids in Mathematics Learning

Use of teaching aids in mathematics learning - Mathematics is one of the subjects that is quite feared by students. Besides being considered boring and the theory is difficult to understand. This is what makes math lessons become one of the enemies that are waiting for students. To make this concept change, certainly a variety of appropriate learning methods are needed and one of them is to use teaching aids. So can using teaching aids in mathematics learning be effective?
Characteristics of Mathematics Learning
Learning mathematics has several characteristics that are different from other subjects. Given the purpose of mathematics is quite important for everyday life such as growing and developing numeracy skills, forming a critical, logical, careful, disciplined and creative attitude, and able to use the mathematical mindset in everyday life makes these subjects become subjects which is important at all levels of education. This is what makes mathematics learning more emphasis on deducative patterns and inductive patterns whose approach is made through real examples. For this reason, the use of teaching aids in mathematics learning is highly recommended to facilitate the teaching and learning process.
In addition, Jean Piaget also revealed that human mental development goes through four stages, namely sensory motor, pre-operational, concrete operations and formal operations. And important things happen in each period, including at the concrete operation stage where children begin to develop concepts through concrete objects to know their relationship with abstract concepts. Jean Piaget's opinion is what underlies the reason for the use of teaching aids in mathematics learning
Strategy for Using Teaching Aids in Mathematics Learning
There are several learning strategies that can be applied to mathematics learning. And from all the strategies put forward by experts, there are two dominant strategies that have been applied for a long time. Both strategies are expository strategies and hauristic strategies. Expository strategy is a learning strategy that aims to convey learning material directly, without the need to find principles, facts and concepts from the theory being studied. While in the hauristic strategy, the learning process is directed at activating students to find facts, concepts and principles they need from the theory being taught. In this strategy the use of teaching aids in mathematics learning will be very beneficial.
These two strategies are generally combined with one another. But the selection of learning strategies must be adjusted to the learning objectives to be achieved. It aims to develop children's learning achievement optimally. So the use of teaching aids in mathematics learning should not only be seen from the form, but must pay attention to function factors and their benefits to facilitate the learning process of students in understanding a theory.
Effectiveness of Using Teaching Aids in Mathematics Learning
Based on some of the above meanings, the use of props is intended to facilitate students in accepting the process of learning mathematics. Some mathematical theories are indeed very possible to be supported by teaching aids, such as the concept of building space, the concept of theorem of phytagoras, and other mathematical theories. So it is possible to foster a positive attitude for the learning process of students. The use of teaching aids as learning media can also make learning more concrete, and easier for students to remember. So it can be concluded that the use of teaching aids in mathematics learning is very effective when applied to the right material.
Description: The use of teaching aids in mathematics learning is intended to facilitate students in understanding abstract theories and concepts on mathematics subjects.
